Okay then everyone, let’s look at something positive today – not covid, as we have all had enough of that!
As you know, I have a fascination for modern architecture and consider myself very lucky to work in the construction sector as I get to see amazing buildings being built.
One of my favourites is at 20 Fenchurch Street in London. You’ll know it as the “Walkie Talkie” due to its distinctive shape. It is a perfect example of a building where the design team created not just a new commercial space, but a signature building that has an identity of its own, as well as enhancing the identity of the surrounding city. When you look at a silhouette of the London skyline on a mug, a t-shirt or a poster – there it is. That’s what I love about this building, the willingness of a team to go over and above the norm, despite the additional complexity, which has created what in my opinion is a modern icon.
Finished in spring 2014 (was it really that long ago?), together with the three floor sky garden that was opened shortly after in January 2015, it stands proudly in London’s usually bustling financial district. This 38 storey building is 525 feet tall. There are bars and restaurants too, which are open to the public along with the observation deck, so get yourself down there when things get back to normal. Do you know this building actually won the Carbuncle Cup!? For those that don’t know, this is an award given to the ugliest new building. How dare they?
As with all new buildings, Latent Defects Insurance is of course important – the mandatory plug for one of the many services we offer! Anyway, stay safe everyone and keep smiling as best you can through these difficult times.
